Memory keeping: December Daily – Day 1

Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit

Happy December !  Is anyone else as astonished as I am that we are at the last month of the year?  Holy mackerel how did that happen?  Well, if it’s December, it’s time for December Daily.  December Daily is a memory keeping project by Ali Edwards.  This will be my 7th? 8th? 9th? year documenting my December (I’ll have to count the albums I have completed to be sure on the #).  I love this project.  I give myself design parameters, it has a beginning and an end date (both things decided by moi) and I love that is different from year to year as our lives are unfolding differently every year.

One of my intentions was to do a little work upfront and set up the album ahead of time so I could just slip photos and stories into the pockets and be done with that day.  Nah, didn’t happen…life and the “lets make all new flannel covers for the throw pillows” project got in the way of that.  Add in a last minute 4 day trip to Rochester to see my Dad and help him with a few things and yep, no upfront work.  BUT   I have a story and a photo and that’s all I really need isn’t it?!

Todays story is about how thankful I am for my sorority sisters (and Dave – honorary Alpha Gam) and how lifted up I was last night with them.  We had the waitress take a photo of us…and, it’s not a great photo…the bar was dark but who cares?  A photo, a story, a bit of cute card…that’s all you need, I have always used paper and hybrid/digi in my albums and this year is no exception.   I’m still on the road so this layout is all digital,  when I get home I will be printing this out at home (it’s 6×8, my album size for this year) perhaps adding some embellishments on top (washi tape, stars, have to see what’s in the kit) and slipping it in the page protector….easy peasy done!

Happy December Documenting everyone!

Happy Birthday Mom & a little photo restoring…

I don’t know about where y’all live but here in New England….I think it may be finally thinking about starting to be fall!  It’s definitely cooler, it’s actually been damp and chilly yesterday and today.  After a summer with almost no rain it was a bit of a relief I will say.  Time to dig out fuzzy socks and fleece over here.

Fall, closely followed by Winter means more inside crafting time around here.  There is still lovely outdoor time to be had in October but I’m definitely feeling the tug to come inside and make stuff!

Today would have been my Mom’s 83rd birthday.  (she’d kill me if she knew I said how old she was)  I was looking through some family scrapbooks and came across this photo of mom with her doll carriage at around 2 1/2 years old.  Love it.  In complete opposition to my usual scan it and make it perfect routine, I snapped a quick photo with my iPhone and tweaked it in PicTapGo (my go to phone editing app).  Here’s the before and after…

I used probably about 4-5 different filters and heavily used the slider to get just the right adjustment.  My objective was really to up the contrast and bring out the details of the photo.  Since I’m working with a purely digital image, I love the flexibility to play around with all the options…

You can go on all day with this.  So I’d better stop, eventually the people I live with will want to eat dinner ;-).  You get the idea.

Most of the photos in the albums are faded out, which isn’t surprising considering…they’re 83years old.  A number of them are even older.  Fortunately, they were stored in albums that were laid flat and did not really see the light of day too much.  The were also not stored in an attic or (even worse) a basement.  Several of the albums even zip shut, which is pretty cool and help keep the images away from sunlight.  So I’d say we’re doing pretty well all in all on antique photos.   I have stacks of albums and a big box of slides to scan and work with ….hello winter project!  I’ll share my progress with the project (and another new big project I have up my [long] sleeve) here as I go!

I have a sweet layout all ready for it’s unveiling using this photo… but it will have to wait until Saturday which is iDSD  (international Digital Scrapbook Day…. didn’t know there was one did ya!).  I’m using a freebie kit from Little Feet Digital Design which will release on her FB page on Saturday morning!  This freebie will also coordinate with a lovely collaboration kit at Gingerscraps which will be having all sorts of amazing sales on Saturday so if you’re a digital scrapbooker, you’ll want to stay tuned for that!

Check back Saturday morning for the layout!  Hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day!!

*working out blog-kinks so hoping the photo formatting doesn’t look too wonky on your end!

1/14: The Big Gray Pot

Happy Middle of January !

Winter had finally arrived here in New England.  It’s cold, it snowed (not enough to really shovel but enough to look pretty), the sun is out and it’s cold.  Just the kind of weather for hearty yummy carb-laden goodies made in the Big Gray Pot.

This week (so far) I made risotto with shrimp and peas.   Risotto is one of those dishes that everyone in the house loves, but I kind of forget about when I’m thinking of things to make.  It is super easy, I use the basic recipe from an old, old Williams Sonoma “Risotto” cookbook.  There is half an hour of minding the pot on the stove as you add the chicken stock but easy to do while you are puttering around the kitchen making salad or cleaning up.  Add to that peas in the freezer and frozen cooked shrimp on sale at MarketBasket and it’s risotto for the win!

The night I made it was my basketball carpool night, after the risotto was finished, I put the lid on and put it in a 200 degree oven to stay warm while I picked up and dropped off hoop stars.  I’ve never “held” risotto in the oven like that before and I think were I to do it again, I’d add a little extra water on the top to keep it moist.  The rice kept sucking up the cooking liquid and wasn’t dry but not quite as creamy.

Hope you try something like this, I love the fact that I can cook something on the stove and then hold it in a warm oven rather than letting it get cold and them microwaving to heat up later.

Have a great day everyone!!

1/7: The Big Gray Pot

Happy New Year!

As I opened up the blog this morning, I realized that i averaged about one post a month last year … let’s see if we can do better this year shall we??  So much good stuff to share, so busy doing I never took to write it down!

Last month for my birthday, my beloveds gifted me with a big new Le Creuset dutch oven.  Swoon and be still my heart!  I have wanted one of these in my kitchen for years.  PicTapGo-Image copyCharlie joked that I used it 3 times the first week I had it… and the problem with that would be????  I thought it might be fun to share what I’ve been making in my new toy this year.    We are in the season of basketball now and I am finding that planning a soup/stew item and a casserole that can be time-baked in the oven gets us through the dinner hour on the nights we are out over dinnertime and want to come home to a hot meal.  It worked during soccer season and seems to be working so far for hoop.

This week my “in the pot” recipe was the Pioneer Woman’s “Chipotle Chicken Chili”.   I love Pioneer Woman and have had great success with her recipes, this one was no exception.  Easy to make with not crazy ingredients, easy to alter for our taste (1 chipotle pepper rather than 3 eeekkk!)  and scoring high on the yum-o-meter with the offspring.  PicTapGo-ImageChili for the win!  This one was deemed a keeper.   My alterations were chicken stock rather than beer and the aforementioned reduction in chipotle peppers (love the flavor need to moderate the heat).   I also tried using some boneless chicken thighs instead of some of the chicken breasts…won’t be doing that again, waaaay too much trimming for the picky eaters so chicken breast it will be next time I make this.   I highly recommend, give it a try!!

Have a great day everyone!!

December Daily …yes, another project (!)

I’m excited to start working on our 2015 December Daily album, it is finally December (my birthday month for which I wait patiently all year!)  and time to dig in to the project.  This will be the 6th or 7th year I’ve done a December Documentation album and this project is one of my very favorites.  If you’re not familiar with the project, hop on over to Ali Edwards Blog and read about the project and her approach.  Love Ali, Love this project and Love December!!

Let’s begin… I’ll apologize for the crummy photos, I will try and re-shoot everything at another time but it’s pretty much dark here at 3:45 because of the weather so not so good for photos.   My goal for this year is really to tell one story a day.  Some years I’ve told one, some years I’ve had several things going on and some years it’s just been a piece of pretty paper (not that there is anything wrong with that).  I’m really starting my album with Thanksgiving but those pages aren’t done yet, wanted to get a jump on December stories and try and get into a daily rhythm .

DD2015-Day1blog

The story of December 1 was a story of being able to laugh at yourself, being able to not take yourself too seriously, and being gracious in the face of extreme goofiness.

DD2015-Day1ablog

Why you ask?  Because my hubby last night took a photo of me nodding off on the couch and posted it on Facebook (!)  general consensus?  He is in very big trouble.  Everyone thought it was hysterically funny (In my defense, it was well past 10 and it had been a long day with a glass of wine at the end).  So not only was I a good sport about the whole thing, It was the perfect story to document general everyday silliness around here….and I will note that when I asked him to take down the post this morning, he did it right away.

This year I’m using Ali’s December Daily Kit as well as the One Little Bird Mini-Kit for my album, along with other supplies I have around the studio.  Hope you give a project like this a try, it can be as simple or as ornate as you like!  I’ll post more general photos/thoughts/ideas later…time to go pick up the girls from basketball practice…one bonus of December here in New England…sports (at least the ones the girls play) move inside!

What are you working on this December?
